What this site is

works.tools is a set of file and text tools that run inside your browser. When you drop in a PDF, a photo or a video, it is opened, processed and saved by code running on your own device — the same open-source engines the desktop programs use (MozJPEG, libwebp, libavif, pdf-lib, PDF.js, QPDF, libheif, Tesseract, OpenCC), compiled to WebAssembly and loaded only when a tool needs them. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no size limit and no account.

The site is made by HelpChat, a messaging app for teams at work, and began as the toolbox for its users: the file jobs that come up every working day. It is open to everyone and free.

That is also why the tools can be free without a catch: there is no server bill that grows with every file. Once a page has loaded it keeps working with the network off. What the site does measure is written down in the privacy policy.

The set is deliberately narrow. A tool is added only when it can be done properly in a browser and when keeping the file on your device is a real advantage — so there are no unit converters, no Word-to-PDF and no video downloaders. What is here is maintained: every fix and every new tool is dated on the changelog, and known limits are listed on the about page.
